The penalties for petty theft and grand theft can be harsh and unforgiving. Even one moment of weakness or lapse in judgment could cost you thousands of dollars in fines and land you jail or prison for a few years. Section 30A of Massachusetts law lays out a dividing line of $100 in the value of goods stolen and cites penalties for first offenses.
Penalties for theft crimes include:

- For a second offense, the fine can go up to five hundred dollars and a third offense could bring a sentence of up to 2 years in jail or prison.
The following factors could affect your sentence, among others:
- If the value of merchandise is above one hundred dollars, the fine can be up to $1,000 and up to 2 ½ years in the house of corrections.
